Working together for smarter winter maintenance and cleaner Pennsylvania waters

Get the Word Out!
Tabling and Outreach
We always say that it's going to take 10,000 conversations to significantly reduce road salt usage in Pennsylvania! This page has resources to help you spread the word.
Tabling Ideas and Materials
"Please could you salt the driveway?"
In this interactive activity, an audience volunteer is invited to spread salt on a mock “driveway” surface. This is then compared to a visual representation of the recommended spacing of salt crystals for effective deicing.
The activity serves as a great springboard for discussion about using the proper amount of salt, and practical alternatives.
Materials:
-
Paving block or sheet of cardboard
-
Box or tray that is slightly bigger than paving block to catch salt
-
Cup of rock salt
-
Brush to clean paving block between uses
-
Sheet of poster board or cardboard with white dots 3" apart to represent correct spacing of salt crystals. Fold this in half so it is not visible until the "reveal"

Steps
1. Say: "Oh no! Did you see the weather forecast? There's supposed to be a freak storm coming in tonight with 6" of snow! Please would someone volunteer to salt the driveway?"
2. Show the audience the "driveway"
3. Audience member pours salt onto "driveway"

4. Unfold the board to reveal the correct spacing of crystals
5. Discuss the correct amount of salt to use and alternatives to using rock salt
